Severn School Community Mourns the Tragic Death of Mathematics Teacher Andrew Otero

The Severn School community in Severna Park is mourning the tragic loss of Andrew Otero, a former mathematics teacher whose impact on students, colleagues, and the broader school community was profound and enduring.

Originally from Bristol, Connecticut, Otero dedicated his life to service, education, and mentorship. A proud first-generation military member, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 2009 at the age of 17. During his five years of service, he was stationed in Washington, D.C., where he worked directly for the White House during the Obama administration—an experience that reflected both his discipline and commitment to public service.

Following his military service, Otero continued breaking new ground as a first-generation college graduate. He earned a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics from Towson University, laying the foundation for a career defined by intellectual rigor, curiosity, and a passion for teaching. He later made his home in Dundalk, Maryland.

At Severn School, Otero was far more than a mathematics teacher. He taught some of the school’s most challenging and rewarding courses, including AP Computer Science Principles and AP Calculus AB—subjects he loved and brought to life for his students. His classroom was known as a place of high expectations balanced with encouragement, where students were challenged to think critically while being supported as individuals.

Beyond the classroom, Otero served in numerous leadership and mentorship roles. He was the Grade Dean for the Class of 2025, a trusted advisor during some of the most formative years of his students’ lives. He also advised United Spectrum, the school’s gender and sexuality alliance, and the Severn Service Society, which provides support to both the school community and the greater Annapolis area. His commitment to equity and inclusion was further reflected in his role as Upper School DEIB Coordinator.

Otero’s dedication extended into athletics and institutional leadership. He served as Head Coach for Track & Field, mentoring student-athletes with the same care and discipline he brought to his academic roles. Additionally, he was a member of the school’s Steering Committee and served as a co-chair for the finance element of Severn School’s accreditation process, contributing thoughtfully to the school’s long-term planning and sustainability.

Above all, Andrew Otero was a beloved father, a loyal friend, and a respected coach and educator. Those who knew him remember his integrity, his willingness to serve others, and his ability to connect with people across roles and backgrounds. His life reflected a rare combination of service, leadership, and compassion.

The loss of Andrew Otero is being felt deeply throughout the Severn School community and beyond. As students, colleagues, friends, and family grieve his passing, they also honor a legacy defined by dedication, courage, and a steadfast belief in the potential of others.
